Planning to Aerate or Fertilize Your Yard?
If spring is the time when you aerate and fertilize your yard, consider deep tine aeration and composting. While standard aeration is great for breaking up compacted soil, deep tine aeration creates macro-pores in your soil using tines that are longer than four inches. The additional depth provides deep drainage, breaks through soil layers, allows your grass to form deeper roots and promotes better overall lawn health.
To further improve your lawn’s health, consider top dressing by spreading a layer of compost over the top of your already aerated lawn. This soil quality restoration process allows your yard to soak up more water. It also allows the compost to feed the micro communities in your soil, resulting in a greener and more sustainable lawn.
Want to hear some really good news? The Iowa City area has three cities that offer programs designed to encourage soil quality restoration. This means if you live in Iowa City, Coralville or North Liberty, you may be eligible for reimbursement of up to 50% of the costs of your soil quality restoration project.
